What's the Right Diet for You

What's the Right Diet for You? is series which aired on BBC.  I came across it on BritBox which at just over $6 a month is a bargain to view British programs. They offer a free BritBox trial if you want to try it.

Taking 75 volunteers, a group of experts broke them down into three groups: Feasters, Constant Cravers and Emotional Eaters. Although they did substantial tests, you can take an online test to see which category you would fall into here. (The calculations for weight are in stones and pounds. There are 14 pounds to a stone - conversion calculator here)

Feasters: They may have a gut hormone that is weak and not signalling the brain that you have had sufficient to it.

Emotional Eaters: Stress produces cortisol and will entice you to want sweet and sugary foods (rewarding foods) as a response to stress. The experts also discovered that when you are tired it produces the same result.

Constant Cravers: Certain genes can make you want to eat and always feel hungry - obesity genes. Cravings are for sugar and fat throughout the day.

Take the test, then look at the suggested diets for your group.

My thoughts: Although all these diets suggest healthy eating and look at the issues that can cause you to have bad eating habits, I do believe that processed food and fast food is the main culprit for both eating habits and cravings. I remember when I was living in London and went on our first trip to California, we were shocked to see people who probably weighed in excess of 350 pounds. We had never, in England or Europe, seen anyone that heavy. Of course, in addition to having very few places for "fast food" during the 70s in England, not everyone had cars either and walked considerably more. It seems that England's obesity epidemic started when fast food was introduced and vehicles were more affordable.
