If counting calories drives you crazy, try an exchange list diet. The idea is that you have listed comparative calories in different food groups and you choose from the list, rather than actually count the calories. The Diabetes Association has lists available. If you are older you may remember the Deal a Meal Richard Simmons weight loss program which was a good way to keep track of what you have eaten with little effort.
I did have a lot of success with an exchange diet at L.A. Weight Loss several years ago but it was expensive.
